Migraine is often viewed as a headache, but this is an over-simplification. An individual with migraine has it all the time, whether they are having symptoms or not. When a person is exposed to a combination of certain triggers such as stress, bright lights, sounds, weather changes or fatigue, they experience a migraine attack. This affects the nerves and blood vessels in the brain, which results in intense pain and many other neurological symptoms such as nausea, sleeping too much or too little, vertigo, and sensitivity to noise.

Debilitating migraine symptoms affect every aspect of life. Calling in sick to work spills over to cancelling all social obligations because migraine attacks make it extremely hard to do even the simplest everyday tasks. This can spiral into smaller and smaller social networks and frequent isolation. Social support is one of the many important lifestyle factors that help relieve migraine symptoms, so here are several ways that you can support a friend with migraine.
